Elanex interpreting services
Elanex currently maintains a network of around 700 qualified interpreters, covering most
of the main languages and subject areas for which we provide written translation services,
and most major metropolitan areas.
Our interpreters are available for onsite interpreting for ad-hoc sessions as well as for extended periods of time.
'Interpreting' refers to oral translating, and is distinguished from written translating. Interpreters
usually interpret in person, although phone-based interpreting is also possible. Interpreting takes two main forms:
- Consecutive - the translation is provided after the original sentence is spoken
- Simultaneous - the translation is spoken in parallel with the original, with only a slight delay
Consecutive interpreting is most common for business meetings, as well as medical and public service interpreting.
Simultaneous interpreting (which is a very specialized skill) is commonly used in speech and conference environments.
Elanex provides interpreting services for the following situations:
- Business meetings
- Tours and delegations
- Conferences
- Speeches
- Medical and public service
Interpreting vs interpretation, and interpreting vs translation
Although both terms are commonly used to refer to oral translation, 'interpreting' is the preferred term, in order
to distinguish from the other meanings of 'interpretation'. Ironically the job of an interpreter is precisely the
opposite of 'interpretation' - since an interpreter is supposed to convey the exact original meaning of the
source language, without modification!
An interpreter is often referred to as a 'translator'. This is not incorrect, since interpreting is
oral translation. However, it is more precise to use the term 'interpreter', since interpreting is a subset of
translating - all interpreters can translate, but not all translators can interpret.
